Title:

The Rescue Project

Abstract:International multi-centred research project, funded by the European Commission, investigating a rehabilitation technique to improve mobility for people with Parkinson's disease. The centres collaborating on this work are Northumbria University, UK; Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven, Belgium; and the Medical Centre at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The goal of the Rescue project is to improve mobility for people with Parkinson's disease. To achieve this, the project is investigating a rehabilitation programme based around the concept of cueing. In Parkinsons disease, a deficit in a specific brain area (basal ganglia) results in disturbed internal cueing of automatic, sequential movements, such as walking. Alternative cueing techniques, which utilise a different pathway in the brain, can improve the quality of movement by providing an alternative means to guide movements. In the first year of the Rescue project (2002-2003), researchers will be undertaking experiments and interviews to determine the optimal means of delivering cues, and the best strategy for integrating cues into a rehabilitation programme. The project will also be testing a 'cueing' device that people can use in everyday life. Finally, in the second and third years of the project (2003-2005), the long term clinical benefits of the programme will be investigated in a randomised control involving a total 150 patients with Parkinsons disease across the three centres. There were 2 initial phases prior to the commencement of the trial. In phase 1, the effectiveness and stability of cueing was investigated, and a prototype device to deliver the cues was developed. In phase 2, this work was brought together into a set of guidelines to be used by physiotherapists.
