Health services
People with neurological conditions will normally visit their GP who will decide upon the most appropriate course of action. This may involve referral to hospital for diagnosis and treatment planning. The specialist neurological centres are: Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, Sunderland Royal Infirmary or James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough and there are outpatient clinics in local district general hospitals.
Increasingly individuals who suffer a stroke are sent to a dedicated stroke unit and in the North East these are at: Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, University Hospital of Durham, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, Sunderland City Hospitals, South Tyneside Hospital in South Shields, James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, North Tees Hospital in Stockton-on-Tees, North Tyneside Hospital in North Shields and Wansbeck Hospital in Ashington.
In this section we have collated a list of Health services in the North East. With the anticipated changes to commissioning of services from PCTs to Clinical Consortia due to be established in 2013, this list will change. We will keep you informed. If you are a patient registered with a GP Pathfinder Group then please let us know.
